About Us

Hive & Harvest is a Queensland honey and gifting business: raw single-origin honey, hand-poured candles, natural body care and gift sets inspired by the Queensland landscape. It began with a few backyard hives and has grown into a small, family-and-friends-owned business that still cares about where every jar comes from.

Our Story

Hive & Harvest started in 2016 as a hobby in Paddington, Brisbane: a couple of mates, a few backyard hives, and more honey than they knew what to do with.

They took a few jars to Rosalie Gourmet Market. The owner tasted it and told them to put a label on it. So they did, and Hive & Harvest was born.

For the next couple of years, Hive & Harvest kept hives across Brisbane, from Paddington and New Farm to city rooftops, Mt Coot-tha and Samford Valley, and sold at local markets. A couple of hives on a property in Maleny added a hinterland honey to the range.

In 2019, Mike partnered with the Cunningham family, the owners of that Maleny property, and Hive & Harvest grew from a side project into a real business. Mike spent the Covid years up on the hill building the apiary: early mornings with the bees, packing honey in the shed, and family and friends always turning up to help.

That’s where Hive & Harvest’s Hinterland Honey came from, and where the Queensland Nectar Trail began: honey from four Queensland landscapes, made with beekeepers they trust.

Today, Hive & Harvest works from its Brisbane workshop. The original hives from the hill now live with the hinterland beekeeper who supplies the Hinterland Honey, and as the business has grown, Mike has built close relationships with trusted beekeepers across Queensland. The property, now known as Horseshoe Hill, remains a big part of the Hive & Harvest story.

How We Work

Where Our Honey Comes From

Our honey comes from Queensland beekeepers we’ve built relationships with over years. That’s deliberate. It lets us offer single-origin honey from four distinct regions, each one reflecting the flora of its landscape, rather than a single blended product. We know where every batch comes from and who harvested it, and none of it is blended with imported honey.

Our original hives from Maleny now live with the beekeeper who supplies our Hinterland Honey.

How We Make Things

Small Batch, By Hand: Our candles are poured by hand in our Queensland workshop, in batches small enough that we control every stage. The beeswax comes from cappings off our own hives, collected and stored over years, well before varroa changed the picture for Australian beekeeping.

Glass Where We Can: Our honey and candles come in glass, which is endlessly recyclable and heavier to ship than the alternative. Not everything in the range can be packaged that way, but we choose glass wherever it’s practical.

Food Safety: We follow best practice for food safety and risk management, with our processes fully documented.

Who We Work With

Our body and bath range is made for us by a Queensland maker using plant oils, beeswax and botanicals. The homewares and household products we stock come from small Australian makers we’ve chosen because they work the way we do.

Meet the team

Mike

Mike started Hive & Harvest in 2016 with a few hives in Paddington and has been at the centre of it ever since. A beekeeper first, he now runs the business day to day: working with our beekeepers, developing new products, and making sure every jar and gift box that leaves the workshop is one he’s proud of.

Stef

Stef brings an eye for design and detail to Hive & Harvest. Her creative input helped shape the look and feel of the brand, and she remains part of the family behind it.
